Executive Summary
Glycated hemoglobin should be measured at least biannually in diabetic patients to document glycemic control, according to National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (NACB) guidelines to be published in the March issue of Clinical Chemistry. Entitled "Guidelines and Recommendations for Laboratory Analysis in the Diagnosis and Management of Diabetes Mellitus," the guidelines were released in draft form in 2000 (1"The Gray Sheet" Aug. 7, 2000, p. 14). Authored by NACB with input from the American Diabetes Association, and approved by the ADA professional practice committee, the guidelines' recommendations also include annual microalbumin testing for pubertal or postpubertal diabetics without clinical proteinuria starting five years after diagnosis of type 1 and at the time of type 2 diagnosis.
