Executive Summary

Pesticides in lanolin: FDA wants five pesticides -- ethion ox analog, cis-permethrin, trans-permethrin, cypermethrin and fenvalerate -- to be included in the two lanolin monographs established by the U.S. Pharmacopeia in 1992. The agency reached its determination after discovering the pesticides in lanolin during a 1994 follow-up study to check whether manufacturers were complying with pesticide limits established under the monographs ("The Rose Sheet" Nov. 4, 1991, p. 8). The issue of pesticides in lanolin surfaced in response to questions about the potential for pesticide ingestion via lip products and nipple emollients used by breast-feeding mothers. FDA plans to complete a write-up of the survey within the next six months...
