Executive Summary
Brazil has invested R$1.4 billion (US$686 million) in 45 university hospitals over the last three years, of which some R$214 million was spent on new medical equipment. The figures are from a review of the national university hospitals restructuring programme (REHUF), which has modernised and expanded the network, and crucially for the government, also strengthened the central role it plays in publicly-funded and public-private healthcare R&D. In 2012 alone, a total of R$585 million was invested through REHUF, of which R$135 million was spent on new medical equipment. These investments are in addition to the resources that Brazil’s university hospitals generate through reimbursement of care.
