In an effort to ensure scientists in Africa – the "original cradle of all humanity," according to National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Dr Francis Collins – are able to take advantage of and effectively capitalise on the worldwide genomics revolution, the US government and the London-based global charity Wellcome Trust has awarded millions of dollars in the first series of grants aimed at spurring genomic research in kidney disease, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, tuberculosis and African sleeping sickness.
