This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Mazor Robotics has CE marked SpineAssist, its robotic spinal surgical system, for sale in Europe. The system may be used in brain surgeries, including procedures to minimise the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Physicians will be able to use SpineAssist to place electronic implants in the brain during deep brain stimulation procedures, which help mitigate the symptoms of Parkinson's disease, dystonia, chronic pain and depression. In February, the Caesarea, Israel-based firm signed up distributors Milan-based AB Medica and Schiedam-based InSpine for SpineAssist in Italy and the Netherlands, respectively (www.clinica.co.uk, 4 February 2011).
