Executive Summary
Wright Medical's Darco foot and ankle plating system is now available in Japan. The product line includes over 40 different locked plates that are used for reconstructive foot and ankle surgery. It is the first system of its kind in Japan for this specific use, Wright claims. The Darco system has been available in the US and "other major international markets" since 2007. Arlington, Tennessee-based Wright acquired the product when it bought foot and ankle specialist Darco International in 2007 for $17m (www.clinica.co.uk, 9 March 2007). The orthopaedic extremity market is growing, at least in the US, where it is expected to expand by over 10% each year over the next five years and generate revenues of more than $4.6bn by 2015, according to analysts at the Millenium Research Group (www.clinica.co.uk, 18 January 2011).
