Prof Nic Jones is to become the new chief scientist at Cancer Research UK, effective 1 February 2011. Prof Jones is currently director of CRUK's Paterson Institute at the University of Manchester – he plans to step down from this role when he takes up his new position, but will continue to lead his research group at the institute, which is studying how cells respond to sudden adverse changes in their surroundings. He will also continue in his current role of director of the Manchester Cancer Research Centre, which brings together key players in cancer research in the city. Prof Jones will succeed Prof Sir David Lane as CRUK's chief scientist. Sir David will continue to advise the charity on its research strategy.
