Executive Summary
The Spanish government's transplants commission (ONT) approved yesterday the world's first transplantation of both legs. The licence for the procedure has been awarded to the La Fe hospital, in Valencia, which has already performed three double hand transplants and one full facial transplant. As with these procedures, the leg transplant will be conducted by a team of transplant specialists from the Pedro Cavadas Foundation. This so-called "compound tissue" transplant has been approved as a one-off experimental procedure; it brings the total number of these in Spain to seven, including three facial transplants and the three double hand transplants.
