Executive Summary
Boston Scientific is to combine its iLab ultrasound imaging system with interventional X-ray systems developed by Philips Healthcare and Siemens Medical Solutions as part of a collaboration with the imaging giants. The pact between the companies will see the iLab integrated into Philips’ Allura Xper system and Siemens’ Axiom Artis and Artis zee systems. The iLab system is designed to be installed directly into a cardiac catheterisation laboratory or radiology suite alongside an X-ray system. According to Boston, the technology enables physicians to incorporate intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) into procedures. IVUS uses high-frequency sound waves and provides physicians a 360-degree view inside the heart and coronary vessels, to help diagnosis and determine treatment options such as balloon and stent sizes. In 2008, Boston signed a similar collaboration with GE Healthcare, whereby iLab was integrated into the Innova cardiovascular X-ray system (www.clinica.co.uk, 15 October 2008).
