Colour Doppler ultrasound, CT and holographic MR angiography could replace X-ray angiography as the standard of reference for carotid disease evaluation, said researchers speaking at RSNA. Researchers from the New England Baptist hospital, Boston, said they found a combination of ultrasound and MR to be extremely effective at detecting atherosclerotic disease at the carotid artery bifurcation in a prospective 25-patient study. Both were accurate and, in 23 of the patients concordant. The MRI images provided a good "road map and thus obviated the need for angiography," said Dr Steven Wetzner.
