Executive Summary
Pharmacy products are likely to be among the first group of consumer goods to have their costs monitored by National Statistics Offices within the context of consumer price indices. The European Commission will prepare a series of Regulations during 1996 to define consumer product areas that will be monitored to measure inflation and assess the convergence of national economies a precondition to monetary union. It will also determine the methods to be used in constructing new price indices - to be known as Harmonised Indices of Consumer Prices.
