Nicaragua's president Violeta Chamorro has declared a state of medical emergency in the country after 15 people died of an unknown disease. Epidemiological investigations are being carried out in the Achuapa region, north of Managua, where the first cases were reported. Symptoms of the disease, of which there are more than 1,000 cases, include decrease in blood pressure and bleeding into the lungs. Testing of serum specimens is being carried out at the US Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention.
