Australia joins Indonesian $15.3 million AIDS project:

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

A memorandum of understanding has been signed between Indonesia and Australia for an AIDS prevention and care campaign worth Aus$20.12 million ($15.3 million). The aim is to support the national AIDS commission of Jakarta, and other projects (to include other sexually transmitted diseases) in Bali, East Nusa Tenggara, and South Sulawesi provinces. Estimates suggest that some 2 million Indonesians may be HIV-positive by the year 2000. This would place Indonesia in third place in the world HIV league behind Thailand and India. As of October, there were 346 cases of HIV and AIDS reported in 15 of Indonesia's 27 provinces, though it is suggested that the unofficial count could be 100 to 200 times higher than this.
