The number of hip fractures in elderly people has risen five- fold in Hong Kong over the last ten years, it was reported at the recent 1995 Congress of the Western Pacific Orthopaedic Association. At least one hospital in Hong Kong is channelling 40% of its total resources into hip replacement surgery. Some 2,200 hip replacement procedures were performed in Hong Kong in 1994.
