French prescription coding begins with diagnostics

Executive Summary
Bar coding of French doctors' prescriptions is to begin with biological diagnostic tests, says French health insurer CNAM. Francois Madignier, head of the insurance body's coding working group, believes most laboratories already operate a highly computerised system of coding for tests. Clinics however, will experience greater change, since they do not operate a computerised tariff system and will have to include test codes on their prescriptions/purchase orders, says Mr Madignier.
