Executive Summary
Pfizer subsidiary Valleylab has developed an earthed shielding system to overcome surface capacitive coupling effects on laparoscopic electrosurgical instruments. The tubular shields go over a range of other manufacturers' instruments and protect against insulation failure - which can cause serious burns to non-target tissue. Valleylab has also developed a range of instruments with built-in protection. The company showed a computer-controlled electrocautery, which adjusts automatically to cut with the minimum of energy and which was launched six weeks ago.
