A total of 9,527 Belgians are HIV-positive, reveal the latest figures published by the institute of hygiene and epidemiology, and almost 2,000 of them have developed AIDS. Men make up around two-thirds of the total. Over two-thirds of female HIV-positive cases were infected by heterosexual contact. The 1995 UN human development report estimates that there are 2.2 AIDS cases per 100,000 in Belgium, one of the lowest rates in Europe.
