The Philippines' 10.7 million schoolchildren are undergoing urine screening in a bid to reduce the 6,500 deaths that are believed to be caused each year by renal disease. By May this year, 41% of the children had been tested and 28% showed abnormal dipstick reactions, says Dr Irmingarda Gueco, research co-ordinator at the National Kidney Institute.
