Executive Summary
The US NIH has awarded Abiomed (US) $100,000 for the development of a remote suturing device. The instrument has potential application in the 1.7 million laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures currently carried out in the US. Dr Robert Kung, senior vice-president of R&D at Abiomed, says the device should simplify and facilitate laparoscopic surgery for more complicated gastrointestinal procedures which are not normally performed laparoscopically due to the complexity of current manual suturing techniques.
