Executive Summary

There has been a marked increase in the incidence of diabetes in China in recent years, according to a 250,000-person survey carried out in 21 provinces. The incidence in Beijing is nearly 4%, compared with 1% in 1979, according to Clinica's Beijing correspondent, while the average incidence across the country is now 2.5%, up from 0.67% in 1979. In Xinjiang province, the incidence is 4.6%. There are now an estimated 25 million diabetes sufferers in China.
