E Merck (Germany) has purchased ProthAid, a French manufacturer and distributor of prostheses, orthopaedic screws and artificial cruciate ligaments, for an undisclosed sum. The company will be merged with Impact, another French prosthesis manufacturer in which E Merck took a majority stake in 1993, to form Merck Biomaterial France based in Valence. ProthAid, which employs 36 staff, had sales of Fr 82 million ($16 million) in 1994.
