Executive Summary
San Diego-based Gensia has extended its distribution agreement with the Laryngeal Mask Co for its laryngeal mask airway (LMA). The product was introduced by Gensia in the US in 1992. Gensia has also obtained exclusive US distribution rights to three new airway management products under development at Laryngeal Mask (formerly Cyprus-based Intavent). The LMA maintains an open airway in patients receiving general anaesthesia and is well suited to outpatient surgery, says Gensia. It does not require manual maintenance. Outpatient surgery accounted for 64% of total surgery in the US in 1993 and is set to increase to 70% by 1996, says the company.
