Executive Summary
Swiss company Roche says that the European Patent Office will grant it a broad patent for thermostable DNA polymerase enzymes. The patent, which will probably come into force in four to six months' time, will cover both native and recombinant enzymes from any species of bacteria. Roche says the patent will not change its policy towards pure academic researchers who use thermostable DNA polymerase. Roche only requires researchers to negotiate a licence if they start to commercialise their work.
