This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Screening for glaucoma in people over 40 should be carried out every one to two years, says Professor Fritz Dannheim. Speaking at a conference in Frankfurt, Germany, Prof Dannheim stressed the importance of early detection of the condition. One in ten Germans aged over 40 has increased inner-eye pressure, which can lead to glaucoma. Between 1% and 2% of those aged over 40 already have irreversible damage to the optic nerve or the field of vision. Around 0.1% will go blind as a result of glaucoma, reports Arzte Zeitung.
