Neuromedical Systems' Papnet automated cervical cancer screening system is also able to detect lung cancer in sputum smears, says a group of US pathologists. Writing in Human Pathology (July), Dr Rana Hoda and a group from Albert Einstein College in New York and St Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado, say the Papnet system correctly identified 30 out of 31 smears with cancer cells in a group of 122 Papanicolaou-stained slides chosen at random from the centres' archives.
