Executive Summary
The European Court of Justice has ruled against Italy for failing to notify the Commission at the draft stage of the June 7th, 1991, decree on medicinal specialties derived from bovine tissues. Italy was ordered to pay the costs. More recently, Italy has published a decree specifically banning medical devices containing bovine materials of UK origin, unless there is proof of no risk of BSE transmission (see Clinica No 711, p 6).
