Executive Summary
Human papillomavirus types 16 and 18 are carcinogenic to humans, experts from 17 countries confirmed at a meeting in Geneva last month. Convened by the WHO and European Research Organisation on Genital Infection and Neoplasia to review national cervical cancer screening programmes, the meeting highlighted the need to check for HPV. The 55 experts formally agreed that types 31 and 33 are "probably carcinogenic" and that other types are "possibly carcinogenic".
