Executive Summary
Medtronic's 69 cc MicroJewel defibrillator has been cleared for release by the US FDA. The latest member of the company's successful Jewel ICD family has an Active Can - the metal skin of the device acts as an electrode - and delivers shocks up to 34 joules. It can store up to 15 minutes of high-fidelity ECG or 10 minutes accompanied by interval plotting, marker channel notations, and expanded flashback memory, a graphical display system for historical data. Medtronic estimates the MicroJewel will have a maximum working life of eight years.
