Executive Summary
The German government has appointed six national reference laboratories to collect and evaluate information on zoonoses - diseases that can be transferred from animals to humans. Five laboratories will be responsible for a specific disease, and one will focus on epidemiology. The laboratories will co-ordinate analytical reports from the Lander and develop controls for diagnostic tests. Results will be submitted to the BgVV (Federal Institute for healthcare consumer protection and veterinary medicine). Diseases covered will include tuberculosis, brucellosis, salmonella, trichinosis and E coli.
