Spain's new President, Jose Maria Aznar, has designated the reduction in hospital waiting lists as a national priority. Before the end of 1996, regions controlled by Insalud, the Spanish health agency, will carry out surgical procedures on 21,000 people who have been waiting more than a year and 24,000 people who have been waiting up to a year. The cost of the extra procedures will be an estimated Pta 2,700 million ($22 million).
