The number of general practitioners has risen 10% in the last 10 years in the UK with the increase being made up almost entirely of women, reveal figures from the DoH Statistical Bulletin. In 1995, 31% of the 28,869 GPs were female compared with 21% of 26,190 in 1985. The average doctor had about 9% fewer patients in 1995 than in 1985. Just under 40% of doctors are in fundholding practices.
