Synpolydactyly, an abnormality of the hands and feet, is caused by a mutation on one of the Hox genes, say Harvard Medical School researchers. Writing in Science (April 26th) the group, led by Dr Y Muragaki, says the mutation can cause two kinds of deformation of the hands and feet: webbing between digits or the presence of extra digits. The Hox genes regulate early embryo patterning.
