Executive Summary
Medtronic has acquired the rights to an internal aortic clamp and has also agreed to fund development of a Dutch device for steadying the heart during bypass surgery. The aortic clamp cannula has been developed by an Argentinian cardiac surgeon, Roberto Grinfeld. It features a balloon which clamps the aorta and which can deliver cardioplegia, vent the heart and connect to a standard extracorporeal circuit. Medtronic has signed a licence for the US patent to the device.
