There will be uniformity of healthcare provision under the statutory insurance system across the whole of Germany from January 1st, 1999, at the latest. Apart from the poor structural condition of some hospitals in the east, differing standards of medical care in the east and west will no longer exist, according to Sabine Bergmann-Pohl, parliamentary secretary of state at the Health Ministry.
