Executive Summary
Germany's statutory Krankenkassen may have recorded an even bigger deficit in 1995 than feared. In December Health Minister Horst Seehofer said he expected to see a deficit of DM 10,000 million ($6,670 million) for the year (see Clinica No 685, p 4). However, Dr Eckart Fiedler, chairman of the Barmer Ersatzkasse, believes the figure could be closer to DM 12,500 million, reports the Suddeutsche Zeitung. Spending by the Kassen rose 4.8% in west Germany and 11.5% in the east.
