Executive Summary
W L Gore & Associates (US) has launched its synthetic dura mater substitute, Preclude, in the US after receiving FDA approval. The search for a synthetic substitute to dura implants from cadavers was prompted by concerns about the possibility of viral transmission. Preclude is composed of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE), which has been used for vascular and general surgical procedures worldwide since 1975. W L Gore manufactures a variety of medical implants, including vascular grafts, sutures and patches for cardiac and abdominal wall reconstruction.
