Infecton better than labelled white cells says study

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Technetium-99-Infecton gives more specific images of bacterial infection than radiolabelled white blood cells. It is also easier to use, say nuclear medicine researchers from St Bartholomew's Hospital in London. Writing in The Lancet (January 27th), Dr S Vinjamuri says Infecton - a conjugate of (99)Tc and Bayer's (Germany) synthetic broad-spectrum antibiotic ciprofloxacin - has a specificity of 84% and sensitivity of 77% compared with 81% and 77% for labelled leucocytes.
