This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Recent projections for HIV infection in England and Wales predict a worryingly high incidence, says a report published by the Public Health Laboratory Service at the request of the Chief Medical Officer. It reveals that HIV transmission among homosexuals is occurring at "substantial levels" and estimates as many as 1,000 new infections a year. Between 1995 and 1999, the survey projects the number of new AIDS cases in the male homosexual and bisexual population may fall 7%, while the number will rise around 25% in the heterosexual exposure group.
