Executive Summary
Gold nanoparticles could be an attractive alternative to radioisotopic tagging in DNA hybridisation assays, according to Northwestern University researchers (Science, Vol 277, p 1078). The particles change colour from pink to blue when brought together during hybridisation, and could be developed into simple and inexpensive instrumental assays with sensitivities down to 10 femtomoles, the authors say.
