This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Two cardioverter defibrillators from St Jude, the Ventritex Angstrom MD and the Contour MD, have been implanted in patients for the first time in Europe. At 44cc in volume, Angstrom MD is the thinnest, smallest implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) yet available, St Jude claims. The 57cc Contour MD stores up to 42 joules, claimed to be the widest available safety margin. The company will file for regulatory approval to start US clinical trials by the early autumn.
