False negative mammograms are more likely during the second (luteal) half of a woman's menstrual phase, according to an analysis of Canada's breast screening data. However, the effect only appears among women who have used oestrogen-based medication or oral contraception, researchers from Toronto University report in Cancer (Vol 80:720-4).
