Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests reveal infectiousness of hepatitis C

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Polymerase chain reaction tests for hepatitis C RNA can be used to tell whether people who are antibody-positive for the disease are likely to be pass it on, Australian researchers have found. The ability to detect infectiousness could help in counselling those exposed to hepatitis C virus (HCV) about the risk of transmission, report Dr Gregory Dore and colleagues in the August 9 issue of the British Medical Journal (Vol 315; pp 333-337).
