Executive Summary
An implantable cardioverter defibrillator which can be upgraded without surgery is now available from Sulzer Medica. In the US some 450,000 people a year die from sudden cardiac arrest. When first implanted the device (Res-Q Micron) can be a simple shock only system. If necessary, the device can later be reprogrammed to give a more sophisticated response.
