Executive Summary
The executive vice-president of the American Medical Association, Dr John Seward, has resigned over a controversial product endorsement deal the association entered into with Sunbeam earlier this year. The deal attracted heavy criticism and the AMA tried to pull out but Sunbeam responded by filing a $20 million lawsuit for breach of contract. Under the deal, the AMA seal would have appeared on certain Sunbeam products including blood-pressure monitors, thermometers and vaporisers (see Clinica No 770, p 7). Dr Seward is the fifth high-ranking executive to have resigned over the Sunbeam affair.
