Raised levels of the clotting factor, fibrinogen, put young women as well as men at risk of heart attacks, says a group of Swedish and US researchers. Fibrinogen has been linked to heart disease in men for some time but until now the importance in women had been unclear. Speaking at the ACC, Dr Margita Eriksson, from the Karolinska Hospital in Sweden, said this is because women tend not to experience heart disease until later in life than men. "They are older, have more hypertension and suffer higher acute mortality," she said.
