Executive Summary
US firm American Biogenetic Sciences (ABS) and the University of Maryland plan to develop a simple, reliable and inexpensive blood test to detect a newly discovered herpes virus. As well as detecting the sexually-transmitted Human Herpes Virus Type 8, the test might also help predict whether a patient will develop Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), a fatal form of cancer which has recently been shown to be strongly associated with the virus (see Nature, August 6). Copiague, New York-based ABS said that treating KS earlier could lead to better outcomes for patients.
