Executive Summary
The European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies has called for the urgent regulation of human tissue banks. It wants a policing body set up alongside the European Medicines Evaluation Agency and directive to cover fundamental ethical principles relating to the use of human tissues. According to the July 25 issue of European Report, the group recommends that periodic surveys should be carried out in the various member states to obtain data on practices relating to the procurement, storage, distribution and import of human tissues. Manufacturers of medical devices using human tissue are watching developments in this area with interest.
