Researchers have developed a mechanical device which can put hip and knee implants through the equivalent of a lifetime of wear in the body in just one week. The device was developed by the government and industry funded Orthopaedic Accelerated Wear Consortium which includes the National Institutes of Science and Technology as well as US implant manufacturers Zimmer, Biomet, Johnson & Johnson and Osteonics.
