Executive Summary
Women who develop breast cancer before the age of 50 are more likely to carry BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations if they have a family history of both breast and ovarian cancer, US researchers reported in the July issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Breast cancer patients with these mutations are also ten times more likely to get ovarian cancer, prompting the researchers to suggest genetic testing for women diagnosed with breast cancer who have a high probability of carrying a mutation. The group was headed by Myriad Genetic Laboratories which provides BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation testing.
