Current HIV testing practices, which typically measure HIV-1 levels in the blood, might not accurately indicate how much virus is in the semen, a new study has shown. Testing HIV levels in semen, as well as targeting treatments to sites where the seminal virus is produced, could allow doctors to monitor viral activity in HIV patients better and also help reduce HIV transmission, the researchers suggested.
